Intervista esclusiva | The VelociPastor: Brendan Steere ci parla in lungo e in largo del film

Fin dalle prime immagini diffuse tra il 2016 e il 2017, The VelociPastor di Brendan Steere ha scatenato la fantasia e i commenti più variegati – e variopinti – del popolo di Internet, naturalmente stimolato dalla follia di vedere un uomo di chiesa non solo trasformarsi letteralmente in un dinosauro (i lupi mannari sono passati di moda da un pezzo …), ma di affrontare poi anche uno stuolo di feroci ninja.

Ebbene, dopo altri due anni di attesa, un nuovo trailer – unitamente all’agognata data di uscita – ha nei giorni scorsi ridestato il focolaio che si era un po’ sopito, riportando immediatamente alla ribalta il giovane regista americano e il suo progetto di lunghissima data, iniziato sotto forma di cortometraggio ormai quasi 10 anni fa.

Questa la trama ufficiale:

Dopo una devastante tragedia familiare, un prete (Gregory James Cohan) si reca in Cina alla ricerca di una spiritualità più profonda, ma si ritrova invece dotato di un’antica abilità che gli permette di trasformarsi in un dinosauro. All’inizio, è terrorizzato dal suo nuovo superpotere, ma una prostituta locale lo convince a usare il suo nuovo dono per combattere il male – e i ninja.

Tra i protagonisti del film ci sono anche Alyssa Kempinski, Daniel Steere, Yang Jiechang, Jesse Turits, Fernando Pacheco de Castro e Aurelio Voltaire.

Per venire incontro alle numerose richieste di approfondire The VelociPastor e la sua storia, abbiamo allora deciso di rivolgerci direttamente alla fonte, intervistando Brendan Steere, che l’ha pensato, sceneggiato, diretto, montato e prodotto.

E non è tutto, perché in esclusiva vi mostriamo anche alcune fotografie inedite scattate sul set dalla fotografa di scena Alyssa Meadows.

Da dove nasce l’idea per The VelociPastor?

L’idea è nata letteralmente dal correttore automatico del mio cellulare. Avevo provato a scrivere “velociraptor” e il telefono lo ha cambiato automaticamente in “velocipastor”. Era il 2010 e avevo 19 anni e pensavo “Ca**o, è una grande idea per un film!”. Haha! Ho realizzato un cortometraggio sotto forma di “fake trailer” per l’anno successivo come progetto della scuola di cinema e questa idea mi ha tenuto praticamente bloccato fino al 2016, quando ho deciso di farne un lungometraggio, ovvero quello che sta uscendo ora!

Quanto c’è voluto per arrivare alla versione definitiva del film?

Ci sono voluti ANNI. Ho lavorato sporadicamente sulla sceneggiatura dal 2011 al 2015, provando costantemente versioni diverse perché non mi sembravano funzionare. Alla fine tutto è andata al suo posto e ho scritto la sceneggiatura per il film definitivo (che poi ho a malapena cambiato in seguito) in due giorni. Le riprese si sono svolte in 12 giorni nel maggio 2016 e la post-produzione è durata circa sei mesi. Abbiamo debuttato al Waaaaay nel 2017 e da lì è stata soltanto una lunga strada verso la distribuzione. Abbiamo mostrato The VelociPastor anche in Italia nel 2018, nel corso di una proiezione speciale a Busto Arsizio assieme al film Presepe Vivente del regista Lorenzo Fassina. Quindi per me è davvero incredibile che stia finalmente suscitando delle reazioni ora, perché il film è frutto di un processo lungo anni.

Come hai reagito davanti alle reazioni del pubblico di Internet dopo l’uscita del trailer?

Per quanto riguarda le reazioni all’ultima versione del trailer che ha appena fatto il giro del mondo, infiammandolo, è stato incredibile! Sono stato totalmente sopraffatto da quante persone che non hanno ancora visto il film lo amino e da quanto siano eccitati. Non potrei essere più felice.

Essendo stato solo il tuo secondo lungometraggio (dopo Animosity del 2013), hai trovato qualche tipo di difficoltà sul set di The VelociPastor?

Onestamente, è stato il set più tranquillo e facile che abbia mai visto. Continuava a spaventarmi il fatto che nulla stesse andando storto o fosse difficile, ma la situazione è rimasta così fino a quando non abbiamo concluso. C’è stato un giorno dove ha piovuto un po’. E basta. Haha!

Ho letto da qualche parte che sarebbero coinvolti dei finanziatori cinesi. Si tratta di una co-produzione?

NON è coprodotto con la Cina. Abbiamo avuto un investitore privato cinese, ma non rappresenta alcuna società. Penso che potrebbe esserci stato un fraintendimento, perché The VelociPastor è stato parzialmente girato in cantonese e in mandarino, ma non si tratta di una coproduzione cinese.

Dimmi qualcosa sul casting

Il casting è stato in realtà un processo incredibilmente veloce – la maggior parte dei ruoli presenti nella sceneggiatura li ho scritto per determinati amici e interpreti, inclusa la protagonista femminile. L’unico ruolo importante che abbiamo dovuto cercare è stato quello del VelociPastor stesso: “Doug”. Abbiamo provato (senza successo) la via del crowdfund attraverso una piattaforma chiamata Seed & Spark, e un uomo di nome Gregory James Cohan, che lavorava lì, ha visto il progetto sul sito e ci ha contattato per chiedere se potesse fare un provino. La mia reazione fu: “Uh … certo amico, quello che vuoi”. Ci ha inviato un nastro con l’audizione e ci ha preso in pieno. E’ stato una scelta istantaneo – ho capito che era lui il prescelto. Il suo livello è rimasto così alto anche durante le riprese. Ma davvero, il 90% del resto del cast è composto da amici e famigliari. Ad esempio, l’attore che interpreta il prete più anziano con i baffi è mio padre. L’ho scelto pensando che sarebbe stato terribile, ma è stato davvero incredibile nel film. Prendetemi pure in giro ora. Haha!

Ti racconto una cosa divertente: gli attori hanno praticamente recitato i dialoghi in sceneggiatura praticamente com’erano scritti. Adoro l’improvvisazione, ma non ne abbiamo avuto bisogno per gran parte del film. L’unica eccezione è il personaggio di Frankie Mermaid (il magnaccia dall’aspetto rozzo col cappello), che ha improvvisato quasi tutti i suoi dialoghi.

Come ti sei regolato per gli stunt?

Le acrobazie sono state coordinate da un istruttore di arti marziali di nome Ryan Wagner, che, per pura coincidenza, è il cugino del mio Assistant Producer. Non si era mai occupato di coordinato dei combattimenti prima di allora, ma ha svolto lavoro fantastico. Si è dimostrato super umile e paziente e anche veramente bravo. Lui e i suoi allievi interpretano tutti i ninja di The VelociPastor.

Dall’ultimo trailer, Robert Rodriguez sembra averti influenzato particolarmente nello stile di riprese (parlo dei suoi Sin City e Grindhouse). Possiamo dire che sia lui il tuo ispiratore principale?

Si, direi che Robert Rodriguez è una delle mie influenze. L’ispirazione principale per The VelociPastor è però probabilmente Black Dynamite di Scott Sanders del 2009, un film che ha fatto con la blaxploitation quello che ho cercato di fare io per creature features / kung fu movies.

Quando potremo finalmente vedere The VelociPastor?

Ci siamo assicurati una distribuzione tramite la Wild Eye Releasing. Il film uscirà in Nord America in DVD e in streaming il 13 agosto, e so che stanno lavorando in questi giorni per la vendita dei diritti e la distribuzione per l’estero. Di sicuro ci faremo sentire quando avremo le date esatte per l’Europa.

Where did this crazy idea of The VelociPastor come from?

The idea literally came from an autocorrect on my phone. I tried to write “velociraptor” and the phone automatically changed it to “veloci pastor”. It was 2010 and I was 19 years old and thought “fuck, that’s a great idea for a movie”. Haha! I made a ‘fake trailer’ short film for it the next year as a film school project, and the idea just kind of stuck with me until 2016 when I decided to make it into a full feature, which is what’s coming out now!

How long did it take to get to the final version of the film?

It took YEARS. I worked sporadically on the script from 2011-2015, constantly throwing out different versions because they didn’t feel right. Eventually everything clicked and I wrote the script for the final film (which I barely changed afterwards) in two days. Filming took place for 12 days in May 2016, and post-production took maybe six months after that. We premiered waaaaay back in 2017 and it’s just been a long road to distribution since then. We actually played in Italy in 2018 at a special screening in Busto Arsizio with Italian filmmaker Lorenzo Fassina’s film Presepe Vivente. So it’s wild to me that it’s finally hitting now, because the film has been done for ages.

How did you react to the reactions of the Internet audience after the new trailer was released last week?

In terms of the reactions to the latest trailer release that just LIT UP THE WORLD, it’s been incredible. I’ve been totally overwhelmed with how much people who have seen the movie love the film and how excited they are for it. I couldn’t be happier.

Since it was just your second feature film, did you find any kind of difficulty on the set of The VelociPastor?

Honestly, it was the smoothest, easiest set I’ve ever been on. It kept scaring me that nothing was going wrong or was difficult, but it stayed that way until we wrapped. We had one day where it rained a bit. That was it. Haha!

I read somewhere that may it is a co-production with China …

It is NOT co-produced with China. We had a private investor who happened to be Chinese, but does not represent a company. I think this might have been misinterpreted because the movie is partially in Cantonese and Mandarin, but it is not a Chinese co-production.

Tell me something about the casting

Casting was actually an incredibly fast process – most of the roles in the script I wrote for specific friends and performers, including the female lead. The only major role we had to cast was The VelociPastor himself: “Doug”. We tried (unsuccessfully) to crowdfund through a platform called Seed & Spark, and a man named Gregory James Cohan worked there, saw the project on the site, and reached out to ask if he could audition. My reaction was “Uh… sure dude, whatever.” He sent in a self-taped audition and he TOTALLY KILLED IT. It was an instant cast – I knew he was the guy. He remained THAT good all throughout filming. But truly 90% of the rest of the cast was friends and family. For example: The actor playing the older priest with the mustache is just my dad. I cast him assuming he would be terrible and he’s actually super incredible in the film. Joke is on me, I guess. Haha!

Funny thing: the actors are almost WORD PERFECT to the script. I love improvisation, but we didn’t really need it for a lot of the movie. The one major exception is the character of Frankie Mermaid (the gross looking pimp in the hat), who improvised almost all of his dialogue.

How did you prepare the stunts?

The stunts were coordinated by a martial arts instructor named Ryan Wagner, who happened to bethe cousin of my Assistant Producer. He’d never coordinated fights before, but he does an amazing job in the film. Dude was super humble and patient and actually good at it. He and his students play all the ninjas in the movie.

From the last trailer, Robert Rodriguez seems to have particularly influenced you. Can we say that he is your main inspiration?

I would definitely say Rodriguez is an influence, yeah. The MAIN inspiration for the movie is probably an American film called “Black Dynamite” by Scott Sanders – it kind of does for blaxploitation what I’m trying to do for creature features/kung fu movies.

Most important: the distribution

We secured distribution through Wild Eye Releasing, through a sales agent called Cyfuno. We release in North America on DVD and streaming on August 13th, and I know they’re working on foreign rights / distribution now. We’ll definitely not be quiet about that when we have dates for Europe!
