Intervista esclusiva | Steve Morger sul LCCAF 2019 (Lake Como Comic Art Festival)

Dopo averlo intervistato due volte nel 2018, prima e dopo il primo LCCAF (Lake Como Comic Art Festival) di Villa Erba, a Cernobbio, a poche settimane dalla seconda edizione (18 e 19 maggio, il 17 galà di apertura), siamo tornati a parlare con Steven Morger, uno degli organizzatori della manifestazione che raccoglie sotto lo stesso tetto uno stuolo di grandi nomi del mondo del fumetto internazionale (quest’anno si va da Dave McKean a Bill Sienkiewicz, passando per Mike Mignola, Don Rosa e Arthur Adams, giusto per citarne cinque degli oltre 30 presenti) e consente agli appassionati della Nona Arte di incontrarli senza ‘ansie’ in un’incantevole cornice.

Hai aspettative diverse rispetto a quelle dello scorso anno? Cos’hai imparato dalla prima edizione del LCCAF?

L’anno scorso, ritengo che lo show sia andato molto bene, eccetto che per un aspetto … mi sarebbe piaciuto vedere più persone lì per godersi la manifestazione e i nostri artisti. La nostra speranza è che più persone avranno nel frattempo sentito parlare del LCCAF da quelli che sono venuti nel 2018. Poiché l’anno scorso è stato il nostro primo anno, abbiamo capito che ai potenziali partecipanti piace avere un feedback prima di provare un nuovo evento. Abbiamo grandi speranze che la partecipazione aumenterà, così da permetterci di iniziare a pianificare il terzo LCCAF.

Come mai avete scelto di non ‘stravolgere’ completamente la lineup degli artisti per il LCCAF 2019, richiamando molti di quelli già visti lo scorso anno?

Penso che quest’anno avremo un alto numero di nuovi ospiti al fianco di alcuni già visti nel 2018. Posso dirmi molto fortunato nel poter chiamare amici molti degli artisti presenti. Infatti, Juanjo Guarnido e Frank Cho sono due dei miei più cari amici al mondo. Una delle cose che cerco di fare è creare un evento dove la gente si senta a proprio agio nel parteciparvi. Per questo motivo, se da un lato voglio portare dei nuovi ospiti, dall’altro sono molto disponibile a richiamarne altri che hanno già partecipato. Ripensando alla mia esperienza con la Big Wow Comic Fest, so che i fan amano la familiarità di vedere ospiti già conosciuti accanto alla novità di volti nuovi di zecca. Continueremo a fare entrambe le cose.

Qualcuno prospettava che avreste ridotto il numero di artisti dopo il LCCAF 2018, ma quest’anno sono addirittura più dell’anno scorso

Abbiamo accarezzato l’idea di chiamare un minor numero di ospiti, ma non ci è sembrata la strada giusta da seguire. Ci auguriamo che questa manifestazione diventi l’evento dove gli appassionati possono incontrare e parlare con gli artisti senza lunghe file. Abbiamo molti nuovi artisti presenti. Probabilmente tanti quanti l’anno scorso [in realtà, saranno 38 nel 2019 contro i 27 del 2018]. Ma molti dei partecipanti del 2018 si sono divertiti e ci hanno chiesto di poter tornare. Per me, si tratta di un grande attestato di stima verso la manifestazione ed è coerente con l’atmosfera amichevole che stiamo cercando di creare.

Lo scorso anno ci avevi anticipato la possibilità di vedere anche artisti asiatici al LCCAF 2019, ma non ce ne sono in scaletta (almeno non mangaka). Avete avuto difficoltà a convincerli?

Sì, abbiamo avuto qualche difficoltà nel contattarne alcuni, perché è un’area geografica nella quale non ho molte conoscenze. Continueremo a cercare di convincere artisti asiatici per le future edizioni, ma non ci siamo riusciti per l’evento di quest’anno.

Ci sono solo due artiste donne quest’anno (Mirka Andolfo e Joyce Chin), meno che nel 2018. Come mai?

A dire il vero credo che il numero sia lo stesso [nel 2018 hanno presenziato Eliza Ivanova, Anna Merli e Claire Wendling], ma la disponibilità per queste date è il motivo per cui non ce ne saranno di più. Una delle artiste dello scorso anno sta aspettando un bambino. Altre possibili nuove ospiti avevano altri impegni (le date coincidono con quelle di un altro paio di eventi). In ogni caso, continueremo a invitare potenziali ospiti senza pensare al genere. È solo capitato che per quest’anno non siamo riusciti ad avere tutti nella nostra lineup.

The words of Steve Morger, manager of LCCAF:

Do you have different expectations than last year? What did you learn from the first LCCAF edition?

Last year, I think the show itself went very well except in one respect — I would have liked to have more people there to enjoy the show and our artists. Our hope is that more people will have heard of the show from those in attendance last year. As last year was our first year, we learned that potential attendees like to have some feedback before trying out a new event. We have high hopes that attendance will increase to allow us to start planning for our third year.

What about the choice to not change completely the lineup of artists for LCCAF 2019, but to call again many of the ones already seen in 2018?

I think that we have as many new guests this year and we had last year with some returning guests as well. I have been very lucky to call many of the artists in attendance friends. In fact, Juanjo Guarnido and Frank Cho are two of my closest friends in the world. One thing I try to do is create an event that people feel comfortable attending. As such, while I do want to bring in new guests, I am very much open to returning artists as well. From my days doing Big Wow Comic Fest, fans like to have the familiarity of returning guests along with the novelty of a brand new face. We will continue to do both.

Someone thought that you would have reduced the number of artists after LCCAF 2018. Instead, this year they are even more! 

We toyed with the idea of fewer guests but it didn’t seem like the right thing to do. We hope that this show is the event where fans can meet and talk with the creators without huge lines. We do have many new artists in attendance. Probably as many as last year [actually, 38 in 2019 vs. 27 in 2018]. But many of the attendees last year had a great time and asked to come back. To me, that is a great testament to the show and consistent with the friendly atmosphere we are trying to create at the show.

You toyed with the possibility of seeing Asian artists at LCCAF 2019, but there are none in the lineup (at least not mangakas). Did you have difficulties to convince them?

Yes, we had some difficulty contacting some of them as that is an area I don’t have a lot of connections with. We will continue to try and get Asian artists for future shows but were unable to get them for this year’s event.

There are only 2 female artists in the lineup this year (Mirka Andolfo e Joyce Chin), less than 2018. How so?

Actually I think there is the same number this year, but availability is why we don’t have more. One of the female artists from last year is expecting a child. Other potential new guests had commitments (we’re the same dates as a couple other shows). But we will continue to invite guests without regard to gender. It just happened that this year we were unable to get everyone on our list.
